In a tragic incident that took place on a commercial flight from Miami to Chile with 271 passengers on board, a pilot was found collapsed in the bathroom. In response, the co-pilot of the aircraft performed an emergency landing in Panama, which caused the flight to be diverted to an alternative destination.
Based on multiple reports, three hours after the flight of LATAM Airlines took off, captain Ivan Andaur 56, began feeling unwell and fell unconscious. As the reports further explained, the crew on board the flight tried to revive the man by giving him emergency treatment, but they were unable to do so.
As soon as the plane touched down at the Tocumen International Airport in Panama City on Sunday night, medical experts rushed to investigate the pilot’s condition but were forced to pronounce him dead. The pilot, Mr. Andaur, was a 25-year veteran of the aviation industry with an extensive amount of experience.
Following the pilot’s passing a bit of controversy seems to be brewing, based on comments made by a nurse who tried to save Mr, Andaur’s life. “Unfortunately, we did not have the necessary or sufficient supplies to perform a good resuscitation,” said the nurse.
The nurse continued to outline his displeasure with the situation that unfolded by stating, “LATAM needs to improve the issue of protocol in case of health and medical emergencies like this where lives can be saved, but the resources are needed.”
On Monday, the airline issued a statement which stated: “During the flight, all the necessary safety protocols were carried out to safeguard the life of the affected pilot.”
